A tarp cover sits loose over the pool, held down by water bags. It is not load-bearing. A child or pet that falls on it is at risk. A safety cover is anchored to the deck and rated for weight. The spring opening is also significantly cleaner: no pumping sludge, no debris that decomposed under a loose tarp all winter.

We don't recommend it. Automatic cover systems are a significant investment, and a heavy snow load can bend the housing track and destroy the mechanism entirely; that is a full replacement, not a repair. The cost of a proper winter safety cover is a fraction of what you'd spend replacing a damaged automatic system. We close automatic cover pools with a standard safety cover and keep the automatic cover for the operating season.
